2002 NATIONAL KIDS PHILOSOPHY SLAM RULES
2002 Topic: "Is the nature of
humankind Good or Evil?"

| Entries: All Kids Philosophy Slam entries must be clearly labeled with student name,
age, grade, teacher, school, school address, phone number and email. Essay submissions may
be mailed or submitted online to: http://www.philosophyslam.org. Mail all other entries

| Schools competing for the title of The Most Philosophical School
in America should include on a separate cover sheet the following information: Contact
person, phone number and e-mail address for your school, the total number of entries
submitted by your school and the total number of students enrolled in your school.
The Most Philosophical School in America will be determined by the following criteria:
Excellence of the entries submitted, the percentage of students participating from your
school and the total number of entries submitted.

| Grades 1-4 Kids Philosophy Slam: Younger kids may paint or draw a picture to express
their feelings or ideas about the topic, or may include words or write a short story, or
use any creative combination of words and pictures. Entries in this age category will be
judged on creativity, originality and overall strength of the message the student is
conveying. A national winner from each grade will be chosen. |
| Grades 5-8 Kids Philosophy Slam: This age category may write prose, poetry, or an essay
of 500 words or less, answering the philosophical question posed, based on personal
experience or feelings. A national winner from each grade will be chosen. |
| Grades 9-12 Kids Philosophy Slam: High school students may write an essay of 500 words
or less, answering the philosophical question posed, based on personal experience. Four
finalists from this category, with parental permission, will be invited (all expense paid)
to participate in the Kids Philosophy Slam Debate on April 20, 2002 in Lanesboro,
Minnesota. |
| Judging: A panel of philosophers, teachers and students will conduct judging based on
the following criteria: originality and creativity, strength of argument, whether the
essay is based on personal experience, spelling and grammar. The top two finalists from
each state will be selected for the semi-final round, and then four finalists will be
selected. Finalists for the Kids Philosophy Slam Debate will be announced on March 18,
2002. All other winners, including The Most Philosophical Student in America, will be
announced at the National Kids Philosophy Slam Debate on April 20, 2002. |
| Special Philosophy Slam: For grade all levels, the Special Philosophy Slam is designed
to make philosophy accessible to all kids of all abilities. Entries in this category will
be judged more on creativity, originality, and overall intent of the message the student
is conveying. |
| Schools: Entries will be coming in from classrooms around the country, and the school
that submits the most entries combined with the best overall judging scores will win the
title of "The Most Philosophical School in America." The winning school will be included in all national press releases
and will be announced live at the Kids Philosophy Slam Debate. Teachers may submit essays
from their classrooms given as assignments, however the students' name, age, grade,
school, school address and phone number must be included at the TOP of each essay with the
teacher's name. |
| Prizes: Total prizes to be awarded will be worth over $2,000. |
**Due to the volume of entries submitted, essays and artwork cannot be returned.

| International Entries: There will be prizes for the top entry from each country and the
overall best International entry. Please submit all essays in English. International
